🌺 The Legend of ʻŌhiʻa & Lehua
According to Hawaiian legend, ʻŌhiʻa was a strong young warrior deeply in love with Lehua. When the volcanic goddess Pele asked ʻŌhiʻa to marry her, he remained faithful to Lehua. Angered by his refusal, Pele transformed ʻŌhiʻa into a tree.
Heartbroken, Lehua pleaded for them to be reunited. The gods answered by transforming her into the beautiful Lehua blossom, placing her upon the ʻōhiʻa tree so the two lovers could remain together forever.
Legend says that when a Lehua blossom is picked, rain will fall—the tears that come from separating the two lovers.
